What My First 6 Months Living in La Paz Mexico Taught Me About Moving to Baja
When I look back at my first six months in La Paz, I realize it wasn’t just a move. It was a transformation. And honestly, those early experiences shaped the way I want Dream Baja Realty to support every client we work with.
When I first loaded up the car and made the drive from Miami to La Paz, I thought I understood what I was getting into - after all, my parents lived in La Paz. I’d done the research and asked the questions. But moving somewhere and actually building a life there are two very different things.

Just hours after crossing the border in Mexicali, the beauty started to unfold.
Those first few weeks felt magical. I’d wake up to sunlight filling the apartment and the Bay of La Paz felt like it was just outside my window. It genuinely felt like I was living in a vacation postcard. In the beginning, everything was new and exciting. I spent a lot of time exploring the city, walking along the Malecón in the evenings, watching families gather and street vendors setting up as the sun went down.
La Paz has a rhythm that’s different from most places people move from. It’s slower, but not in a lazy way. It’s intentional. People take their time. They enjoy their evenings. They connect with each other. At first, it feels like you’ve stepped into a different world.
But somewhere around the second month, reality starts to set in.
For me, that’s when the little challenges began to show up. My Spanish was far from perfect, and I quickly realized that simple daily interactions could feel intimidating. I’d rehearse what I wanted to say before walking into a small shop, only to get completely lost when someone replied faster than I expected.
Then there were the small day to day adjustments. Nothing dramatic, but the kind of things that come up when you’re settling into a new home anywhere. A water heater that had its own personality. A few repairs that needed attention. Figuring out which local contractors to trust. Coordinating all of that in a new country can feel overwhelming if you don’t have guidance.
That’s one of the first lessons that stuck with me. Buying the home is just the beginning. What people really need is support after they arrive.
By the third month, things started to shift for me. I began recognizing people around town. I made friends with other expats who had already been through the same learning curve. I met local business owners who were incredibly generous with their time and advice.
I even joined a monthly dog sterilization campaign, partly because I love dogs and wanted to contribute to more having homes and love, but also because I wanted to meet people and feel more connected to the community. That experience made me realize how important it is for new residents to find their people here.

It’s not just about property. It’s about belonging.
My Spanish improved too, mostly through necessity. At some point I stopped trying to translate everything in my head and just started communicating. Imperfectly, but confidently. And that’s when life here started to feel easier. (Almost 6 years in...mi español todavía está lejos de ser bueno.)
By month four, La Paz stopped feeling like a new place and started feeling like home. I had my routines. My favorite coffee shop where they knew my order. A taco stand I’d stop at after long workdays.
I learned the rhythm of the city — when the markets were busiest, when the produce was freshest, which areas had the best breezes in the evening. The house started to feel like my house, not just a property I was living in.
My work adapted too. Early morning property tours, slower afternoons, and taking time to appreciate the sunsets here...which are regularly amazing.
Then month five brought a reminder that life doesn’t stop just because you move somewhere beautiful. A big real estate deal suddenly fell apart, and I had to manage a stressful situation in an unfamiliar place.
It was one of those moments where you fall back on your habits — problem solving, communication, staying calm under pressure. But there was one big difference this time. When the calls ended and the stress started to build, I could walk down to the beach. I could clear my head with the sound of the water and the open horizon. I could go to El Autentico Super Burro for arrachera tacos (look it up...i'm not here to do all your work for you! But in all honesty, go to Super Burro!)

El Autentico Super Burro - nothing fancy...just 100% delicious.
That moment changed my perspective. La Paz wasn’t just a great place to live. It was a place that helped me live better.
By the sixth month, everything felt different. I knew where to get the best seafood in town. I knew which spots along the coast had the most incredible sunrises. I knew which streets flooded after heavy rain.
More importantly, I had real friendships here. Real routines. A real sense of belonging.
And that’s when it became very clear to me how Dream Baja Realty should approach every client relationship.
Buying property in Baja isn’t just about square footage, ocean views, or closing a deal. It’s about helping people build a life here. It’s about guiding them through the transition — from curious visitor to confident homeowner to someone who truly feels part of this community.
Because the truth is, the biggest questions people have usually come after they get the keys. How do I set things up? Who do I trust? Where do I go? How do I settle in?
My first six months in La Paz taught me exactly what that journey looks like, and it’s the reason I want Dream Baja Realty to be more than a brokerage for our clients. I want us to be a guide, a connector, and a long-term partner in helping people create the life they came here looking for.
La Paz has a way of simplifying things. The pace slows down. The sunsets remind you what matters. The community pulls you in.
I came here thinking I was just changing locations.
What I really did was change the way I think about home — and the way I believe we should help others find theirs. 🌅
