Mexico Residency in 2026: Why Now May Be the Best Time to Apply
As 2025 winds down, many people considering a move to Mexico are asking the same question: Is now the right time to apply for residency—or should I wait until 2026?
The truth is, applying sooner rather than later could save you time, money, and stress. Between a shortage of consular appointments, evolving solvency requirements, and constant changes within Mexican bureaucracy, it’s important to be prepared.
At Dream Baja Realty, we work with buyers every week who are not just looking for their dream home in Baja California Sur, but also planning for the practical side of making Mexico their home. Residency is a big part of that journey—so let’s break down what you need to know.

The Appointment Shortage: A Real Challenge
If you’ve tried to book a Mexican residency appointment at a consulate near you, you’ve probably noticed how difficult it can be.
Consulates have been overwhelmed with applications this year—serving not only Mexican nationals renewing passports, registering children, and applying for dual citizenship, but also thousands of foreigners pursuing residency. The result? A widespread shortage of appointments.
But don’t lose hope. Here are a few tips:
Check consulates in person. Sometimes, visiting in person gives you better luck than waiting online.
Consulate shopping. Some applicants apply through consulates outside of their home state. Just be sure to read the requirements carefully—many consulates require in-state residency or ID.
Work with an immigration facilitator. Facilitators often know which consulates have the soonest availability and can sometimes secure appointments more efficiently.
Even once you arrive in Mexico, the National Immigration Institute (INM) is also facing backlogs. Reports have even surfaced of “appointment scalpers” selling INM slots. Working with a trusted facilitator can help you avoid unnecessary delays.

What’s Changing in 2026? Solvency Requirements
Residency applicants must meet financial solvency requirements, which historically have been tied to Mexico’s minimum wage. Since minimum wage typically rises 15–20% each year, this calculation often makes residency more expensive over time.
Earlier this year, however, the Mexican government announced a new formula using Unidades de Medida y Actualización (UMAs)—a system that usually increases only with inflation.
Here’s a look at the expected requirements if UMAs are applied in 2026 (based on current exchange rates):
Temporary Residency (monthly income): $4,181 USD net
Temporary Residency (savings/investments): $70,466 USD net over 12 months
Permanent Residency (monthly income): $7,010 USD net
Permanent Residency (savings/investments): $281,928 USD net over 12 months
Family member add-on: $1,352 USD net monthly per person
The challenge? These UMA-based requirements were supposed to go into effect in August 2025, but many consulates still haven’t adopted them. That means some may continue using the higher minimum wage formula into 2026.
If you’d rather not gamble with next year’s requirements, starting the process now could be your best bet.

Why Work With an Immigration Facilitator?
Mexican bureaucracy moves quickly—and not always in predictable ways. One month requirements may change, the next month consulates may update their systems.
That’s why we recommend working with vetted, experienced immigration facilitators. A good facilitator can:
Help secure hard-to-find appointments
Ensure your documents are complete and correct
Guide you through the INM process inside Mexico
Prevent costly mistakes that might delay or derail your residency
The cost of using a facilitator typically ranges between $250–$600 USD per person, depending on the level of support needed. Considering the importance of securing residency, this is often money well spent.
Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late
Residency in Mexico is becoming more popular every year, and requirements are unlikely to get easier.
By applying now, you can:
Lock in today’s requirements before 2026 brings new changes
Avoid rising financial thresholds tied to minimum wage
Secure your spot despite the appointment shortage
Enjoy peace of mind knowing you’re one step closer to your new life in Mexico
Moving to Mexico takes planning, but with the right help, the residency process is absolutely manageable. Thousands of people are securing their visas each year—and you can too.
